The King James Version contains “fear not” or “be not afraid” approximately 103 times. However, when considering the broader concept of not fearing—such as verses encouraging trust in God, peace, courage, and the absence of fear—this number increases significantly. A search for “fear not” and related concepts yields over 145 verses, and when including passages about peace, trust, and anxiety, the number of relevant verses exceeds 500! The Bible contains numerous verses that address the theme of not fearing, emphasizing God’s presence, strength, and care. The origin of fear is traced back to Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden, where fear led them to hide from God. This foundational moment established fear as a mechanism through which Satan can gain influence over humanity. It is considered the opposite of faith and is seen as a primary tool used by the enemy to hinder believers from fulfilling their purpose and walking in spiritual victory. Fear is one of Satan’s most potent and effective weapons. Fear is Satan. Fear is a stench to God. The words of Isaiah 41:10 gives us comfort and assurance: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand.” As Christians, we have been delivered from the power of darkness (Colossians 1:13) and we are people of the Light. Having been redeemed from the darkness into the light, and from the power of Satan unto God, we are commanded to walk in the Light according to 1 Thessalonians 5:5. October is a month dominated by the darkness of the spirit world that seeks to instill fear with children being the major target. Paul says in Ephesians 5: 11-14 “Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. For this reason it says, ‘Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” It is time for Christians to depart from anything connected to the deeds of darkness and that focuses on death (skeletons), evil spirits (ghosts), and mediums (witches). James 4:7 commands us to “resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” This includes anything that opens a door to the occult, sorcery, magic and the works of the devil. Instead of being entangled by these things, we are called to expose these works by living in the light of Christ that brings life and truth, enabling individuals to awaken from spiritual slumber and rise from the dead, allowing Christ to shine upon us and through us!
As believers in Christ, we must begin this battle against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places, by putting on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6: 11-18), drawing near to Jesus and remembering that greater is He who is within us than he that is in the world. (1 John 4: 4) John also gives us more instructions on walking in the light. He says in 1 John 1:5 “that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” Then in verse 7 he says, “if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” The greatest weapon the believer has against Satan is pleading the blood of Jesus Christ upon us. Like the song says, “The blood will never lose its power.” 1 John 3: 8 makes it clear, “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
The enemy uses fear to manipulate individuals by instilling doubt, anxiety, and worry, often disguised as concerns for the future, such as fear of losing one’s job, home, or relationships. Jesus encourages us with this analogy in Matthew 10: 29-31, “Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Then in Matthew 11: 28-30 Jesus invites us to come to Him with all our burdens, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are haven laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Paul in Romans 8: 31 encourages us with these words, “If God is for us, who is against us?”
Fear is also linked to deeper spiritual consequences, including depression and confusion, and is seen as a gateway for demonic influence into a person’s souls—our mind, will, and emotions. It is described as a sin that opens doors to unclean spirits, which can cause us misery. The Bible warns believers to be sober and vigilant, as the devil “walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8) However, believers are given authority over these spirits through faith and the power of God’s Word. The truth is, Satan knows the weaknesses of our minds and uses these weaknesses to influence fear over us. He uses fear for several reasons: 1. To diminish our courage and cause us to retreat. 2. To affect our ability to do the things we need to do. 3. Steals our peace of mind. 4. Influences rational thoughts and actions in a negative way. Satan is a “liar and the father of lies.” (Jn. 8: 44). He is “the accuser of the brethren, who accuses them before our God day and night.” (Rev. 12:10) Satan uses our weaknesses against us in order to cause us to sin, in hopes that we will stray from God and continue to live in sin. The Bible reveals to us the tactics that Satan uses and it also tells us exactly how to resist him so he will flee from us and the good news is we are victorious in Christ! Paul assures us in Romans 8:37-39 that “In all these things are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, not any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
The spiritual battle against fear is emphasized as crucial for growth and maturity in faith. Scripture encourages believers to trust God’s promises and not to worry about the future, as God knows our needs and will provide. The solution to fear is found in faith, love and a sound mind as promised in 2 Timothy 1:7, which states that God has not given believers a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. As believers we are not only victorious over adversities like tribulation, persecution, and hardship, but we are empowered by Christ’s love to emerge with greater faith, joy, and spiritual strength, even glorifying Him in our trials. This victory is not achieved through human effort but through the divine power and unchanging love of Christ, who has already defeated sin, death, and Satan, ensuring nothing can separate believers from God’s love. By relying on God’s promises, resisting the enemy through prayer and the Word, and stepping out in obedience, we can overcome fear and walk boldly in our God-given destiny.
If we feel anything other than power, love or a sound mind in any situation, it’s not coming from the Lord and goes against what the Scriptures say about God’s promises. Most of what we are fearful of isn’t a real threat or will never happen anyway. When we are faced with the unknown, we go through every “what if” scenario and usually end up landing on the worst-case scenario as what we think the outcome will be. Remember, Satan is the father of lies and he wants us paralyzed by fear! Fear causes weakness and weakness will break us down and make us depressed. There are many reasons why the devil uses fear to attack us and every reason is related to our relationship with God. Satan wants to: 1. Stop or slow our spiritual growth. 2. Decrease our faith in God. 3. Confuse us in our calling. 4. Control us and keep us bound. 5. Turn from God completely (Satan’s ultimate goal).
A friend gave me a quote many years ago that best illustrates the battle against fear and faith. “Fear knocked at the door, Faith answered. No one was there.” The words of Jeremiah 17: 7-8 gives us a vivid picture of faith and trust in the Lord, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD and whose trust is the LORD. That extends its roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruits.” We must be deeply rooted and grounded in God’s TRUTH so we will not fear in times of trouble. The truth is that Satan cannot touch us unless we let him or God permits it as in the case of Job. The cure for both fear and doubt is FAITH! We must affirm God’s Word deep in our hearts and minds to help to overcome any fears or doubts that may arise. Affirming means speaking out loud God’s Word when we feel fear or doubt. How to stop fear and doubt: 1. I believe in the Name of Jesus Christ, therefore I am a child of God. (John 1: 12) 2. I am born again so the wicked one cannot touch me. (1 John 5: 18) 3. God in me is greater than he who is in the world. (1 John 4:4) 4. I have authority from Christ Jesus to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing by any means can hurt me. (Luke 10: 39) 5. God is with me wherever I go, so I will not be afraid. (Isaiah 41: 10)
To grow in our faith, we need to make it a point to get with God daily in prayer and keep our focus on Him at all times and in every situation. We need to read and study the Word of God in order to implant truth in our hearts and minds. And we need to give thanks and praise to the Lord for all He does for us. We are to be in the world, not of the world. Christ gave us the Word, the Truth: John 17:14-19 says: “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.” This truth is confirmed by Paul: Romans 12: 1-2…”do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
We have not known the truth. Every century, more traditions and rituals were added, and we have not known how to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We were unaware that we were living as Gentiles, hearing and speaking the lies shared over the centuries without seeking the Father for the truth. Over 400 years ago the Pilgrims gained truth through the Bible translated into English. They sacrificed all to come to America in 1620 and started by banning the church structure from England. However, the church structure was re-established by the immigrants from Europe and within 250 years its evil worldly roots had spread across America. When Christ came, He confirmed we are not to live our life aligned with the world plan. We are to seek the Father/TRUTH, and share the Father/TRUTH to help people realize why we each have to know TRUTH. With the help from the Father, we can counter the deep layers of the evil plan of the god of this world and the love of money that is the root of all evil. We are not to fear because we are to live in GOD’S CURRENCY. When we are filled with faith, it’s a faith walk and functioning in God’s Storehouse. We can operate in God’s Currency so it would not matter what happened in the world, even if the currency and the economy collapsed, it would not matter to believers because we would be able to continue to function with and bless each other!
We must return to the Father’s plan. The Church, the household of God, is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ as the Chief Cornerstone. The people in the Acts Church were aligned with the Lord and lived separate and set apart from the world. They knew the Lord was real. They also knew that the many gods and goddesses (the spirits and demons) in the world are all dead. We must remember that there are only two kingdoms: 1. aligned with truth/life with the living Lord. 2. aligned with death and absent from truth. Romans 8: 16-17 assures us that when we accept Jesus Christ as Savior, we become joint heirs with Christ, adopted as God’s children. This means that the believer’s acceptance, favor, and destiny are measured by Christ’s own standing with the Father. We are His children, and He is our Creator—and no father would want His child to go astray. Whoever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith! Fear not!
